With the opening of the sixth seal we have a great earthquake, the sun turned black, the moon red, the stars fall from the sky, the sky rolled up, and mountains and islands moved. What could John have been trying to tell the people of his time? What could John be trying to tell us? Everyone tries to hide from the judgment that is going to take place. John tells us in the next chapter of Revelation that the people of God are safe from this judgment but what about these events. The opening of the scrolls is a revealing of human history in the throne room of God but these events are way beyond normal occurrences. I think what John is saying is that when the final judgment is just about to happen it will be obvious to everyone, believers and non-believers. It will be a horrible and scary time for those who are not following God’s will but those who are going to be with God in paradise have nothing to worry about. This was a message of comfort for the people living when John first wrote this and a message that those persecuting them would not go without God’s judgment. For us the message is the same. We should keep doing what we believe God wants us to do, as individuals, and trust that God will deal with the injustices of this world in due time. That’s not to say we shouldn’t try to battle injustice but if things don’t work out we should trust that God is in control.
