A Scroll

Revelation 5:1-5 talks about a sealed scroll which can only be opened by the Lamb of God. If the scroll represents all of human history what would the impact of not opening the scroll be?

This scroll is in the throne room of God so opening it in God’s presence reveals all of human history to God. If the scroll was never opened our lives would mean nothing to God. In other words if Christ had not died on the cross our lives would mean nothing to God. This seems to indicate that because Christ died for our sins God will now look at our history and our actions do matter. I think this is consistent with what is written in the book of James that Faith without works is dead. Jesus taught that to enter the kingdom of heaven we must love God, our neighbor, and ourselves. Is it possible to claim to love anyone without caring about what needs they have and figuring out what you can do to help meet those needs?

I think there are many of us who would like to help but when we look at the needs of the people of the world the problem just looks too big and we get tired before we even get started trying to help. We need to realize that God gave everyone different gifts and your gift may not be to help millions or even hundreds. God may only want you to make a difference in the life of one other person. What a different world we would live in if everyone acted out of love in each thing they did each day. But, it’s not our job to get everyone to change it’s only our job to change ourselves and make sure what we do is done out of love and if we truly love God, our neighbor, and ourselves to find opportunities to show that love.
