Revelation not for the future

What Happens When We Look at Revelation as a Futuristic Book

When we look at anything like Astrology, Palm Reading, Bible Prophecy, etc.  as a predictor of future events we tend to try to fit events into our perceived future. If I told you that by reading this blog, and getting five others to read it, good fortune would come your way, and you tried it what could happen? Actually something good happens to almost everyone at some point in their day. So, if you are looking for it and connecting it to having read this blog you’ll think this blog has some wonderful power.

The same sort of thing happens when we try to tie parts of Revelation to historic, current or future events. We can always make some connection.

Revelation talks about famine, so are the starving people in Africa and or other parts of the world a sign that the end is near, or something that is part of human existence as long as there is evil in the world. Today’s famines are not the first this world has seen nor are they currently the worst.

Revelation talks about war, so are the current wars around the world leading up to one final great war, or are wars part of what we should expect throughout history?  During the first and second world wars there were those who thought they were the beginning of the end.

If you take the concept of an antichrist from revelation and start looking for a person in history to be that antichrist many possibilities come up Nero, a Pope, Hitler, Luther, Saddam Hussein, George Bush, Barack Obama, or anyone of your choice.

What might people do if they interpret things happening now as end time signs? Perhaps you wouldn’t care about the earth or the environment because we’ll soon have a new earth. Maybe you’d look for a cult of 144,000 and try to find a place to retreat to avoid all the end times perils. You might find yourself supporting something that would trigger a war in the Middle East so that the war to end all wars would begin. If you think of anyone as the dragon of Revelation you’ll judge their actions based on a preconceived notion and lose all objectivity about anything they say or do.

Christ said we don’t know the time of his return and it will be in the twinkling of an eye so trying to guess at the time of his return and is fruitless. When Christ returns he should find us going about the daily lives he wishes us to be living.
