The people from the Church at Smyrna were poor in worldly possessions but rich in Godly things. In Revelation there isn't a lot said about this Church but it is the only one of the seven Churchs that has no complaint from God. There are some who would teach that prosperity is a sign of God's grace being given to you. The converse of this would be that if you're poor God must be holding back something from you because you have done something wrong. Smyrna is the pooest of the 7 Churches and the one that has done nothing to offend God. This is a clear message that our worldly richness or poorness is not a sign of how close or far from God we are. Of course there's nothing wrong with asking God to bless us with good things. It's just wrong for us to judge our standing or anyone elses standing with God by the blessings we have in this temporal world.
